About South Wales Miners Museum

The Museum was officially opened in 1976 and was the first mining museum in Wales. Located within the beautiful Afan Valley, just six miles from the town of Port Talbot, the museum is one of the many attractions to be found within Afan Forest Park.

A registered charity (no. 1102321), the museum is managed by a team of volunteers, dedicated to promoting the proud industrial heritage of the Afan Valley.
Visit the museum and find yourselves being taken on a historical journey back in time. Our knowledgeable guides, or handheld audio tours will take you through the working life of a South Wales miner, and the hardship that both adults and children of the time would endure.
The museum consists of both our detailed indoor "underground tour" and outdoor exhibits, which include a Blacksmith's Shop, Lamp Room and Engine House with a working miniature steam train!
