Planning a trip has always been about discovery, whether that's stumbling upon a hidden coastal path, tracking down the perfect castle, or finding the right place to eat once you get there. To make that discovery a little easier, we've introduced Gwydion: our new AI assistant designed to help visitors explore everything Wales has to offer.

Available across the VisitWales.com website, Gwydion can answer your questions and offer personalised recommendations and inspiration, drawn directly from our own trusted content. Think of it as a friendly, knowledgeable companion for the planning stage of your trip, one who happens to know Wales inside out.

What can Gwydion do?

Gwydion is there to help when you're not quite sure where to start, or if you have a specific question that a search bar alone can't easily answer, and it responds in whatever language you're most comfortable using. It can help with things such as:

  • planning a trip or building an itinerary across North Wales, Mid Wales, South Wales or West Wales;
  • recommending destinations, attractions and accommodation based on what you're looking for;
  • suggesting things to do based on your interests, location or how much time you have;
  • pointing you towards relevant articles, guides and listings from across the site.

You might ask Gwydion something like:

  • "Where can I go for a family weekend in Mid Wales?"
  • "What are the best castles to visit?"
  • "Suggest a three-day itinerary in North Wales."

Why the name Gwydion?

We wanted a name that felt distinctly Welsh, and one with a story behind it. Gwydion is a character from the Mabinogi, one of the great works of Welsh literature and mythology. Associated with wisdom, creativity, transformation and guidance, the name felt fitting for a tool designed to help people find their way through everything Wales has to offer.

How does Gwydion work?

Gwydion's knowledge is drawn from the same content already published across the Cymru Wales websites. So, when Gwydion makes a recommendation, it's pointing you towards a page that's been through the same quality checks as everything else on the site, and you can follow the link to explore further, check details, or take the next step in planning your visit.

Why we built it

The way people expect to interact with websites is changing. More and more, visitors want to ask a question in their own words and get a helpful, tailored answer, rather than working out the right search terms or clicking through several pages of navigation.

Gwydion offers a new way of helping people move more easily from that first spark of inspiration through to planning the details of their visit.

Beta launch and what happens next

Gwydion has launched as a beta capability, which means it's still learning and improving. You may occasionally get an answer that needs double-checking against the linked page, so if something looks off, the source page is always the best place to confirm the details.

Looking ahead, this is just the first step. Plans across the Cymru Wales estate include AI-generated summaries of longer articles, AI-assisted search, help building personalised itineraries and more.
