About Dyffryn Fernant

Dyffryn Fernant Garden is a wonderful surprise of a garden. It is approached over the Preseli hills as you head towards the sea on the North Pembrokeshire Coast. Dipping down into the small country lane and up the track you have no idea what lies beyond.
Over the last two decades this modern garden has grown out of its ancient landscape, presided over by the rocky tor of Garn Fawr, Christina Shand is the garden’s creator and curator. She has drawn inspiration from the existing environment, the hillside, marsh and farm enclosures, and created a conversation between herself, Garn Fawr and the spirit of the place.
The success of the garden is that it works as a whole despite having so many distinct areas. The Front Garden is a flamboyant burst of colour and seasonal container planting, the Rickyard has swathes of peonies and agapanthus contrasting with ordered topiary, the Courtyard a mix of exotic architectural foliage and succulents and the Orchard an ever-changing herbaceous border leading out to the species rich marsh on the valley floor. The Bog Garden, anchored by a powerful obelisk, is particularly atmospheric. Nicky’s field, a geometric display of ornamental grasses within a natural meadow, leads onto the peaceful pond. Lastly, climbing to The Magic Garden above the house, reveals the complete landscape and affords an encounter with Garn Fawr.
