Juniper & Seren – Unique Historic Railway Wagon Escapes in Mid Wales
Hidden away on a beautiful third-generation family sheep farm in the heart of Mid Wales, Juniper and Seren offer a truly different kind of countryside escape. These are not purpose-built shepherds’ huts, but two genuine 1920s railway wagons, lovingly rescued and restored by hand before being given a new life as luxurious, characterful places to stay.
The wagons were originally used on the railway and were decommissioned in the 1950s. After many years spent on a local farm as a workshop and storage space, they were facing an uncertain future. Rather than seeing these pieces of Welsh railway history go to scrap, they were carefully restored, preserving as much of their original character as possible. Original steelwork, curved ceiling sections and historic railway details have been retained alongside beautifully crafted new elements and locally sourced timber.
Today, Juniper and Seren sit in their own scenic and secluded positions around 60 metres apart, giving each hut a wonderful sense of privacy. Both enjoy beautiful views across the surrounding Welsh countryside, with the River Wye flowing through the farm and accessible on foot. It is a setting where guests can genuinely slow down, breathe deeply and enjoy the simple pleasures of rural Mid Wales.
Two huts, two distinct characters
Although they share the same fascinating railway heritage, Juniper and Seren each have their own individual personality.
Juniper, with its beautiful olive-green exterior, takes its inspiration from the rich, earthy colours of the surrounding landscape. Seren, meaning ‘Star’ in Welsh, reflects the changing colours and moods of the Mid Wales sky.
Inside, both wagons combine historic character with modern comfort. Guests will find a handmade double bed with a quality, medium-firm mattress and plush bedding, a cosy seating area, heating, Wi-Fi and a thoughtfully equipped kitchenette. Each has a Belfast sink, oak worktop, two-ring induction hob, fridge/freezer, air fryer, toaster, kettle and everything needed for relaxed self-catering.
The ensuite shower rooms have hot water supplied by a gas boiler, with towels, robes and thoughtful essentials provided. Original and reclaimed details are woven throughout the interiors, creating spaces that feel individual, welcoming and full of stories rather than mass-produced.
Your own outdoor space
Outside, each wagon has its own private area with original Edwardian bath, heated by the same gas boiler system, offering a wonderfully indulgent way to unwind while looking out across the countryside.
There is also a private firepit with a hotplate, with miniature hand-split seasoned logs and kindling provided, together with comfortable outdoor seating. On a clear evening, guests can sit around the fire, watch red kites gliding overhead and, thanks to the area's dark skies, look upwards towards the stars.
The farm itself is part of the experience. Guests can follow a three-mile nature trail through meadows, woodland and ancient hedgerows, finishing in an area of ancient woodland. Along the way there are wonderful opportunities to spot birds, butterflies and other wildlife, while the River Wye is just a short walk from the huts.
A working Welsh farm
Juniper and Seren are part of a genuine working family farm, rather than a recreated rural experience. Guests may see our Suffolk sheep grazing in the fields and meet our small herd of friendly pygmy goats. Depending on the season, there may be lambs, farm activity and the everyday sights and sounds of countryside life.
There is something particularly special about staying somewhere where nature, farming and accommodation exist side by side. Guests can enjoy the seclusion and privacy of their own little retreat, while still feeling connected to the landscape and the working farm around them.
Explore Mid Wales
The location is ideal for discovering some of the most beautiful landscapes and attractions in Mid Wales. The spectacular Elan Valley and its reservoirs are within easy reach, as are Rhayader and Builth Wells. The surrounding area offers opportunities for walking, cycling, wildlife watching, wild swimming, paddleboarding and exploring quiet country lanes and beautiful Welsh countryside.
Or simply stay close to home. Take a walk beside the River Wye, follow the farm trail, watch the red kites, soak in the outdoor bath or sit beside the fire as the sun sets over the hills.
Juniper and Seren offer more than somewhere to stay. They are a chance to step away from busy everyday life, reconnect with nature and experience a little piece of Mid Wales from your own private historic railway wagon- restored with care, surrounded by countryside and given a new chapter in its story.
