About Tŵr Marcwis - Anglesey Column
Set high above the Menai Strait with sweeping views across to Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), the Marquess of Anglesey’s Column is a striking 27-metre Doric monument built in 1817 to honour Henry William Paget, the 1st Marquess of Anglesey and hero of the Battle of Waterloo.
Designed by the celebrated architect Thomas Harrison, the column is crowned with a brass statue of the Marquess added in the 1860s. Climb the 115 internal steps to the viewing platform at the top and you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views over the Menai Strait, the Isle of Anglesey, and the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia).
But the site offers much more than just a view. The column stands atop a rare outcrop of blueschist rock, formed over 570 million years ago. This unique geological feature makes it a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and part of the internationally recognised GeoMôn UNESCO Global Geopark, making it a fascinating visit for curious minds of all ages.
The surrounding woodland is also home to native red squirrels – a rare and much-loved species that thrives in this peaceful habitat. With luck and a little patience, you may catch a glimpse of one darting through the trees.
After exploring the monument and grounds, relax at the on-site Column Café, where you’ll find hot and cold drinks, light lunches, and home-made cakes.
