Race the Train is a well-known annual running event held in the coastal town of Tywyn. Race the train is unique because participants compete against a steam train travelling on the historic Talyllyn Railway. Runners try to reach the finish line before the train completes its journey along the railway line.
The race starts near the railway’s main station in Tywyn and follows a route through the surrounding countryside towards Abergynolwyn before returning to the finish area. The courses include a mixture of road sections, farm tracks, trails, and uneven terrain, which makes the race physically challenging for participants. At the same time, runners are able to enjoy views of the Welsh countryside as they compete against the train.
There are several different race options available, allowing people of different abilities to take part. The longest race, known as the Rotary Challenge, is about 14 miles (23 km). Shorter races include distances of around 10 km, 5.5 miles, and 3.5 miles. The event is organised by the Tywyn Rotary Club and raises money for local charities and community projects. Over the years, Race the Train has become a popular community event that brings together runners, volunteers, and visitors each summer.
ROTARY CHALLENGE (14 miles)
This is the classic start on the crest of the main railway line bridge adjacent to the Talyllyn Railway station. Both the runners and the train are started by the train whistle ordered by the timekeeper.
