About Open Doors - Powis Castle and Gardens

Rising dramatically above its celebrated gardens near Welshpool, Powis Castle welcomes visitors for a special weekend as part of CADW's Open Doors celebrations. Dating back to the 13th century, the castle has evolved from a medieval fortress into an impressive country residence, with richly decorated rooms displaying paintings, furniture, tapestries and fascinating collections gathered over many generations.

 

Outside, the gardens are an attraction in their own right. Visitors can explore the famous Italianate terraces, colourful borders and striking clipped yew trees, as well as the formal gardens and quieter woodland areas. With beautiful views across the Severn Valley, the Open Doors weekend provides a wonderful opportunity to discover both the history of the castle and its remarkable surroundings.
