About Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway
The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway is a historic narrow gauge line running through the Mid Wales countryside between Welshpool and Llanfair Caereinion. Steam and diesel locomotives haul heritage coaches form around the world up some of the steepest gradients in Britain, with views across the valleys and hills of Powys. The line is unusual for its mix of original W&LLR locomotives and stock from across Europe and Africa, making it a living museum of narrow gauge practice from around the world.
Start your journey at either Welshpool or Llanfair Caereinion and enjoy a relaxed trip through fields, farms and woodland. Both termini have a shop and picnic areas, with space to pause before or after your train. Llanfair Caereinion Station also has a Tearoom selling home-made food and cakes and a selection of hot and cold drinks.
The railway suits families, couples, groups and enthusiasts, with a programme of special events, including galas and seasonal trains, on selected dates. Services and opening vary through the year, so please check the website for current timetables, fares and accessibility information before you travel.
