Hi, I am Stella, owner of Bala‑Backpackers Hostel in the market town of Bala, North Wales. My name and phone number are on all the marketing, so you always know who you are dealing with.
Bala is a small Welsh town with a big lake and a lively outdoor scene. Llyn Tegid, the largest natural lake in Wales, is about 200 metres from the hostel, and the National White‑Water Centre is 3 miles up the road. You have sailing, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, cycling, hill‑walking and fishing all close by, plus plenty of Welsh culture in town.
If you have not tried hostelling before, think of it as self‑catering on a shared, communal basis. Bala Backpackers offers hostel‑style, good‑value, self‑catering accommodation in 1800s character buildings in a quiet, sunny chapel square. There are 31 comfy single beds, in shared rooms, with simple shared facilities.
Prices are based on you bringing your own linen, two flat sheets and a pillowcase, or a lightweight sleeping sack. You can also hire a sheet sack if you prefer. We provide the quilt, pillows and mattress, which must be covered so you sleep between laundered sheets.
The hostel is clean, safe and nice for the price, with a careful, arty, homely atmosphere and a few hints of luxury, what some people now call "posh‑packing". There are shared showers, a wet room, dining area and guest kitchen. Catering can be arranged, or you can book the restaurant opposite.
Bala is superb for sailing, canoeing, kayaking, cycling, hill‑walking, fishing, golf, wildlife, geology and the arts. Or you can just wander into town, sit by the lake and take in a real Welsh small‑town atmosphere.
