About Eco Cabins, Centre For Alternative Technology

Overlooking CAT's allotments, the Eco Cabins are two turf-roofed wooden cabins located near our Visitors Centre and surrounded by stunning sustainably managed woodland.

Key Details:

The Eco Cabins are two green-roofed cabins overlooking CAT’s allotments. They are not on mains water or mains sewage, instead we store water from the surrounding hillsides in a large reservoir on site and safely use this for a variety of purposes. Hot water for the cabins is generated by solar thermal panels on the grass roof as well as via the wood-stove for heat and hot water.

There are two 18-bed Eco-Cabins, providing hostel-style accommodation for up to 36 people. They are ideal for large family groups, active groups, visiting students or workshop participants.
Approaching the Eco Cabin from the covered link area you enter a welcoming, open-plan living space with kitchen facilities to meet the needs of self-catering groups. Beyond is the bedroom area with six bedrooms, including two singles, plus shower/wet rooms and toilets.

Hot water for the cabins is generated by solar thermal panels on the grass roof as well as via the wood-stove for heat and hot water. A range cooker with hob and two ovens can be used for cooking.
Innovative Water Recycling

Used water passes through the reed bed sewage system where it supports a variety of plant and animal life, before returning safely to the environment.
