Brecon is a bustling market town right at the top edge of the glorious Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. It's known for the famous Brecon Jazz Festival, independent shops and cafés, history, military connections and of course, the magnificent cathedral. Brecon is the perfect base for exploring the national park, watersports and fishing in the local rivers, canal and lakes, plus cycling and mountain biking. Punch Maughan, Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) Tourism Ambassador, takes us on a brief tour of the town.

The Regimental Museum of The Royal Welsh

The exploits of the 24th Regiment during the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War are legendary.

Queen Victoria referred to her regiment as 'The Noble 24th', while Stanley Baker developed worldwide interest in them with his movie Zulu. On display at The Regimental Museum of The Royal Welsh is one of the finest collections of military artifacts that tell the story of this historic regiment. The focal point of the museum is the not-to-be-missed Zulu War Room.

Brecon Cathedral and Close

Along with the awe-inspiring architecture of Brecon Cathedral itself, don’t miss the heritage centre: an interpretative exhibition, restaurant and shop in an atmospheric 17th Century former tithe barn. The exhibition centre makes use of the latest technology in telling the story of Brecon Priory from its 1093AD beginnings to its present use, and really makes history come alive.

Gate Gallery & Glassworks

Admire and buy Kathryn Roberts’ bespoke glassware creations in her workshop gallery and if you fancy it, book a session to see her working at her furnace. The gallery is right on the edge of the Usk at Watergate Bridge, and Kathryn was selected to design a range for Heals in London as part of their 2012 autumn/winter collection called 'Elements'.
