About World Mountain Bike Chariot Racing
Llanwrtyd Wells is famous for hosting some of the world’s most unusual sporting events. One of the most exciting and unusual is the World Mountain Bike Chariot Racing Championships, a competition that combines creativity, teamwork and high-speed action.
The event was created as part of the town’s effort to attract visitors with quirky and entertaining competitions. Llanwrtyd Wells is well known for unusual events such as the World Bog Snorkelling Championships, and mountain bike chariot racing quickly became another crowd favourite.
In this competition, teams of three people take part. Two ride mountain bikes alongside each other, while the other stands on a small two-wheeled chariot attached behind the bikes. The riders pedal as fast as possible while the chariot passenger balances and holds on as they race along the course.
The races usually take place on rough terrain or grassy fields, adding an extra challenge for both the riders and the chariot passenger. Speed, balance and coordination are essential for success.
Like many events held in Llanwrtyd Wells, the championships often include a fancy dress element. Teams sometimes decorate their chariots and wear costumes inspired by historical chariot racers, superheroes, or humorous themes. This creates a lively festival atmosphere and entertains spectators.
The event attracts competitors and visitors from across the UK and beyond. Spectators enjoy the combination of sport, creativity and humour, making it one of the most memorable highlights of the town’s annual sporting calendar.
