Have you ever wondered where the coins in your pocket come from? Or are you perhaps a numismatist (someone who collects coins!)? Then come along and discover the history of coins and how they are made at the 2018 ‘Best Told Story’ award winners, the Royal Mint Experience in Llantrisant, South Wales.

The Royal Mint has been based in Wales since 1968, when it was built in preparation for decimalisation. It’s where all the UK’s coins are made – millions every year! Did you know they also design and produce military and sporting medals, and strike coins for over 100 other countries?

When you arrive at the Royal Mint, take the guided tour, where your guide will start by showing you a short film starring presenter Dan Snow. You will then be given an introduction to coin making through the ages, see some of the equipment that is used in the coin making process, and discover what happens to all the old coins taken out of circulation. Then it’s time to watch new coins being made in the factory through the large viewing window. For a small extra fee you can even strike your own legal coin!

After the tour, the exhibition is a must. Avid coin collectors (numismatists) will love the rare coins on display, and there are plenty of games and interactive displays to keep the children busy. There is an extensive display of foreign coins which have been made on site, and you can even see the 2012 Olympic medals which were also struck here. And if you’ve ever wondered how much you are worth in gold, step onto the scales at the exhibition to see how much money you’re worth!

All this coin talk is thirsty work, so you’ll be pleased to know that there’s a café on site, and you can even book afternoon tea in a private room! The Royal Mint Experience is accessible for wheelchair users and visitors with visual, mental or hearing impairments.
