Five heavenly spots for chocoholics

Several of Wales’ artisan chocolatiers offer the chance to learn the art of chocolate and truffle making in fun, hands-on classes. Or perhaps that should be hands off – they’re mine, all mine.

    Run by local lad Jules James, one of the UK’s few Master Chocolatiers, this award-winning artisan chocolate boutique is always full of heavenly aromas. Everything is handmade on site, from luxury truffles to individual dragon-motif bars in exotic flavours.     Among the many tempting half-day cookery courses on offer at this thriving new centre are three hour sessions in which you’ll learn how to make chocolates to give as gifts, beautifully wrapped. The food shop sells award-winning Welsh brands of chocolate such as Baravelli’s, made in Conwy, and creates mouthwatering displays for Easter and Christmas.

  • Award-winning husband and wife team Nick and Kitty Sharp create chocolates in a converted barn in the Ceredigion countryside. Since setting up in 2010, they’ve devised all sorts of original recipes, from hedgerow blackberry truffles to latte vanilla bars. To share the magic, you can join one of their three hour classes, learning about tempering, ganache, rolling, dipping and decorating. Delicious.

    Treat yourself to a Chocolate Lover’s Break at this four star hotel. You’ll spend the morning with an expert chocolatier, learning secrets, sampling chocolate and making truffles. You’ll leave with a fistful of recipes and all the goodies you’ve made – if you haven’t already scoffed the lot, that is. Luckily, there’s a health club here, too.

    Purple on the outside, scrumptious on the inside, this chocolate factory, café and delicatessen invites you to hear the story of chocolate, watch chocolates being made, drink pure liquid chocolate shots and create your own bars and wrappers. There are all sort of treats to sample, from chocolate lollies to chocolate pizzas.
