The Senior Open Championship 2017
Get ready for a parade of golfing superstars on Royal Porthcawl’s luscious links as the Senior Open Championship gets underway 27-30 July.
It’s the second time that the star-studded competition has graced Royal Porthcawl’s historic greens. Back in 2014, the Senior Open’s first visit to Wales served up a feast of world-class golf, as Bernhard Langer stormed to an unprecedented 13-stroke victory. Quite an achievement considering he was up against a field of top-class players that included Tom Watson, Colin Montgomerie, Ian Woosnam, Fred Couples and Miguel Ángel Jiménez. This year’s edition promises an equally stellar line-up, so we recommend picking up your tickets sooner rather than later.
One player who will definitely be there is 2002 Ryder Cup hero Phillip Price, who makes his Senior Open debut when the competition kicks off on 27 July. Pontypridd-born Price is looking forward to testing his skills on Royal Porthcawl’s sometimes breezy terrain, describing it simply as ‘the best links golf course’.

Price isn't the only superstar singing Royal Porthcawl's praises. Speaking of his first impressions of the course, five-times Open winner Tom Watson said: 'I really fell in love with it immediately. It's a great test of golf.' He also believed that the Senior Open could be just the beginning for Royal Porthcawl, adding: 'This would make a great Open Championship golf course in my opinion.'
Other pros to chime in included Ryder Cup hero Colin Montgomerie, describing Porthcawl as a 'fiery' test of links golf, and 2012 Senior Open winner Fred Couples, who said: 'It's right up there with the best courses I'ver played over here. You had better be a pretty good golfer to play four rounds here. It is a true test. It's absolutely spectacular.'
