Euro 2016: Sing when you’re winning
You can’t qualify for a major tournament without having a football song. It’s illegal. We’re so excited about Euro 16 we’ve got no fewer than seventeen songs… so far. Proof, if any were needed, that we’re truly the Land of Song. Here are just four of them - see which one’s your favourite.
Manic Street Preachers – Together Stronger
The official anthem is a rousing foot-stomper with a typically Manic soaring chorus. In keeping with ancient football anthem tradition, the video features the entire squad pogoing in the background.
Super Furry Animals – Bing Bong
They originally wrote this for 2004 tournament. Wales failed to qualify… thereby denying the world the chance to hear this stupendous piece of trippy magic. Until now. So very worth the wait.
Gwerinos & Yws Gwynedd – Hogia Ni
This rollocking bit of Dolgellau folk comes with that most essential ingredient of a football song: a crackingly singalongable chorus. There’s an English version, All the Way, if you’re so inclined.
The Barry Horns – This is Wales
The Barry Horns, named after former Wales captain Barry Horne, are a brass band made up of die-hard Wales fans who play at every Wales home match giving a new lease of life to classic songs with a Welsh footballing twist and getting the crowd on their feet and singing the new lyrics for days afterwards. The band’s techno-esque offering name-checks a multitude of Welsh villages, towns and cities, and is sure to be a hit with fans this summer.
