5 lakes for coarse & game fishing

Whether a lowland reservoir or a glacial cirque, a wild game-fishing water or a private coarse fishing lake, we’re not short of places to fish in Wales. Here are five of our favourites. Tight lines!

  • Llyn y Gors Course Fishing Lake, Anglesey
Llyn y Gors Course Fishing Lake, Anglesey by Robert D Thomas

Quality fish in large quantities and a horizon of Snowdonia peaks – no wonder this six-lake private fishery has been ranked among the UK’s top ten. Experts love it for net-busting carp. Fish up to 35lb have been landed in Thompson’s Pool, whose nutrient-rich waters also harbour large catfish. Yet there are other options: a deep-water Karpium lake stocked with hard-fighting carp, the Reed Lake full of coarse species and the mature Carp Lake with the promise of pike.

  • Llyn Trawsfynydd is located in the heart of Snowdonia and has a surface area of 1,200 acres. This is fishing for purists; an opportunity to escape into nature and watch waterbirds on the islands, maybe even glimpse an osprey. Host to numerous international fishing competitions, the reservoir is regularly stocked with rainbow trout and has a good head of wild brown trout from 1-7lb. You’ll also find perch, rudd, pike (try by the old stone walls), large eels and a few elusive grass carp.

  • Llyn Brenig, Snowdonia

    Llyn Brenig reservoir, Snowdonia

They know a thing or two about casting at Llyn Brenig. Reserved exclusively for fly-fishing from boat or shore, the 920-acre reservoir is a regular venue for the Home Fly-fishing Internationals. That reputation is built on trout: brown (wild, spawned in the streams around the lake and stocked, from the lake’s fish farm), tiger and, above all a stock of over 36,000 rainbow trout. All are hard fighting and of the highest quality.

  • A private fishery owned by a former world (1975) and European (1985) coarse fishing champion. Ian Heaps created this lovely spot tucked away in a quiet corner of Pembrokeshire. He provides 90 pegs on three mature lakes plus a stretch of the Eastern Cleddau river for spin- and fly-fishing, and depending on which of the two-acre lakes you fish, you will generally hook carp, tench, crucians and bream.

  • Boat and jetty at Llangorse Lake, Brecon Beacons
    Llangorse Lake, Brecon Beacons

Welcome to Llangorse Lake the premier pike lake in Wales. Wait until October, when the pleasure boats are moored for the season, and this 400-acre lake in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park provides genuine thrills from a rowboat (bank fishing is not permitted). Llangorse is not all about pike, however. Perch over 3lbs provide good sport and there are large shoals of roach and bream, and massive eels that sometimes snap up bottom pike baits.
