Kamus Quartet at The Great Hall

Swansea University, Fabian Way, Crymlyn Burrows, Swansea, SA1 8EN, Wales

24 March 2019

Finland’s Kamus Quartet is one of the most prominent Nordic ensembles and continues to delight audiences with a strong and distinctive voice. They present a programme of pieces that showcases the diverse and unique languages of three composers. Sibelius took inspiration from Finnish mythology and traditional folk music and is very much the mother tongue of the Kamus Quartet.

Mendelssohn’s much-loved sound is at its clearest in the E minor quartet which includes a virtuosic Scherzo so typical of the composer. Shostakovich’s unique voice grasps listeners and draws them immediately into the composer’s sound world. Particularly dramatic and touching, the ninth quartet holds a place as one of the finest string quartets of the 20th century.

Sibelius Adagio in D minor
Mendelssohn String Quartet no. 4 in E minor, Op. 44 no. 2
Shostakovich String Quartet no. 9 in E flat, Op. 117
