A husband and wife team originally created Gypsy Wood Family Fun Park to care for Simba, a small horse born with deformed legs. There's also the biggest garden railway in Wales and mini-diggers to enjoy.

Llanfair, near Harlech, is the setting for the Children's Farm Park where you can easily keep the kids enthralled for a day. Pigs, calves and pigmy goats are a few of the locals, and there’s an indoor sandpit, crazy golf and plenty of café and picnic areas.

For starters, take your pick from bottle feeding pigs, rampaging through a play zone, handling hamsters, pony rides, pet racing, adventures through swamps and a badger-themed quest. On an off-shore site overlooking a nature reserve, Cardigan Island is a clifftop wonder welcoming a cast of dolphins, grey seals, pups, porpoises, seabirds and numerous other maritime visitors. Say hello to the hill-dwelling prairie dogs, Tex and Mex, Llinos the llama and Bruce the wallaby from Australia, joined by Vietnamese pigs.

The Meadows Farm Village in Caerphilly is an interactive animal experience. There are a variety of species, including meerkats, guinea pigs, miniature pigs, wallabies and prairie dogs. Enjoy a coffee and cake, with cover for rainy and hot days. The walkways have been improved for wheelchairs and mobility scooters and there's an accessible compost toilet.

Cefn Mably Farm Park has been designed with children in mind, there are thousands of feet of heated and undercover play areas for children at this menagerie between Newport and Cardiff. Pony rides, picnic areas and plenty of opportunities to get close to some amazing animals feature, as well as a special play area for under-fours.
