First stop is at Wales youngest city Newport to Tredegar House, set amidst 90 acres of award-wining parkland and one of the finest late 17th century mansions in the UK. The earliest surviving part of the building dates back to the early 1500s. Guided tour of the spectacular grand staterooms and history of the Morgan family and the notorious pirate, Sir Henry Morgan. Newport Transporter Bridge, built to cross the River Usk which has one of the greatest tidal variations in the worldwide. The grade 1 listed structure was completed in 1906, designed by the eminent French bridge engineer Ferdinard Arnodin and still in working order. Guided tour at the impressive Raglan Castle, one of the last stone built castles in Britain. Not only did this prominent site afford a strategic location but it also provided the occupants with fine views of the surrounding countryside and the hills beyond. Despite centuries of depredation, it remains one of the finest late medieval buildings in the British Isles. Guided tour around the Fortress of Isca in Caerleon, one of Europe' s most intriguing and enlightening Roman sites, established in AD 75 as the permanent legionary fortress of the 2nd Augustan Legion. The visit explores the amphitheatre, built around the same time as the Coliseum in Rome, Europes only remaining legionary barrack blocks, and the Fortress Baths.
