Salem Chapel B&B and Nature Reserve
Salem Chapel was constructed in 1867 for the Calvinist Methodist Church. In 1991 it was converted into a house incorporating many original features. Situated in a slightly elevated position in Salem, Betws Garmon on the A4085 between Caernarfon (5.5 miles), and Beddgelert (5 miles), it is easy to find and has a private driveway and parking.
The Chapel has fine views over the water meadows and out nature reserve on the banks of the Afon Gwyrfai (river). This is a splendid, tranquil place to relax, dip ones toes into the mountain water and watch the hundreds of small fish that always seem to be there. This private reserve is a designated 'Site of Special Scientific Interest'. We are fortunate that it is a favourite place of the Gwyrfai otters and they appear here on a fairly regular basis to feed and play. Our guests may use our willow hide to watch them and the herons, dippers, kingfishers and barn owls which may be seen. Badgers and even pine martins are also in the locality. The meadow is rich with Marsh Marigolds, Flags Iris, Marsh Cinquefoil and a great many other wild flowers and there are many varieties of Dragon and Damsel flies which can be seen on warm days flying over the water.
Back at the house there are reference books and binoculars available for use and a wildlife diary in which to enter your sightings.
Looking beyond the river there are good views of the Welsh Highland Railway as it negotiaties the fringes of the 'Elephant' mountian (Mynydd Mawr), a popular landmark and walk. The pathway to the top of the Elephant Mountain starts at the foot bridge over the river opposite the chapel and takes a couple of hours. From the ridge there are excellent views of Snowdon and Anglesey.
The Welsh Highland Railway runs between Caernarfon, Waunfawr, Beddgelert and Porthmadog. Access to the railway is at Plas y Nant Halt a 5 min walk south of the Chapel.
