SSE Enterprise Wales Senior Open Heads to Celtic Manor Resort

Teeing off 3 June, The SSE Enterprise Wales Senior Open sees some stellar golfers take to Celtic Manor’s Roman Road course for three days of scintillating competition.

The roster is packed with familiar faces. England’s Paul Wesselingh will be looking to make it two in a row after his victory in 2015, while last year’s joint runners up, Australian Peter Fowler and local hero Ian Woosnam, will be doing their best to end his streak.

‘It would be good to go that one step further,’ Fowler said. ‘I’ve been trying to do my homework on the greens here. The wind is tricky, but the greens are even trickier. There’s so much slope on them you really need to learn as much as you can about them. They have got some massive, massive slopes on these greens. You definitely don’t want to be in the wrong place.’

For Woosnam, 2016 is another chance to secure the home Open win that has narrowly eluded him on several occasions on both the European and European Senior Tours. ‘I maybe should have won here in Wales in the past,’ he said. ‘Let’s go out there and see what happens. Sometimes when you’re not expecting to win you can go out and turn it around. I only need to hit a few good shots and maybe it will all come together - I’m surprised I’ve done as well as I have over the last few years. It’s great coming back here and having everybody recognise you as a golfer from Wales.

Whoever comes out on top won’t have an easy ride. There are plenty of big names in the field, including Ryder Cup player and former European number one Ronan Rafferty,  2012 Wales Senior Open winner Barry Lane and the Senior Tour’s most prolific winner Carl Mason.
