More big players confirmed for 2017 Senior Open Championship

With the 2017 Senior Open Championship at Royal Porthcawl just a few weeks away, a number of global golfing heavyweights have signed up for the competition, which runs 27-30 July.

British legend Sir Nick Faldo will celebrate his 60th birthday with a trip to the South Wales coast. For the six-time Major winner and Europe’s highest scoring Ryder Cup player, the Senior Open is the perfect way to mark the occasion. "Playing a little competitive golf is part of my own plan for celebrating my 60th birthday and I look forward to playing the Senior Open,” Faldo said. “I have played a couple of Champions Tour events in the United States over the past month and know a little more about my game. It is my goal to create a winning memory or two at Royal Porthcawl and I look forward to it all.

Joining Sir Nick will be Spanish superstars José María Olazábal and Miguel Angel Jiménez. For 51-year-old 2012 Ryder Cup hero and two-time Masters winner Olazábal, the 2017 competition will be a Senior Open Championship and Royal Porthcawl debut. “I missed it last year because of my health, but I’m really looking forward to playing at the Senior Open Championship and playing on a true links course,” he said. “Everybody I have spoken to has said great things about the course. I’ve heard it is a fantastic links layout, with a few blind shots, which is exactly how it should be out there. Miguel Angel Jiménez

Olazábal’s compatriot Jiménez made his Senior Open debut at Royal Porthcawl back in 2014. Since then, he’s added four over-50s titles to his list of 21 European Tour wins. “I’m looking forward to playing the Senior Open at Royal Porthcawl and returning to the course where I played my first Senior Major,” said Jiménez. “It’s a good golf course, and if the weather is hot and dry like it was in 2014, it will be very challenging indeed.

These latest additions join an already stellar roster including John Daly, Fred Couples, Colin Montgomerie, Ian Woosnam and 2-14 Senior Open Champion Bernhard Langer. The Senior Open Championship tales place at Royal Porthcawl 27-30 July. For tickets and further information, head to the Senior Open Championship website.
