Rest easy....those blissful summer holidays are almost here and since 2017 is the Year of Legends, we're calling all foodies, loungers, adrenaline junkies, outdoor dancers, swimmers and picnic enthusiasts to experience Wales.  No matter who your tribe consists of or what your bag is, here are some fantastic ideas for legendary days out around Wales this summer.

  • Family exploring Welsh scenery

    Wales is a country rich in history and culture. If you fancy uncovering some of the many legends of the land, download the new Vale Tales app and take a walk around one of its ten trails in the pretty Vale of Glamorgan. The storytelling app tells you all about legends of the local area.

  • King Arthur's Labyrinth
    King Arthur's Labyrinth

    The legend that was King Arthur has his earliest roots in Wales. Trace his history by watching the much anticipated film King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, many scenes from which were filmed here. Alternatively, be guided around the family-friendly King Arthur's Labyrinth in Machynlleth for a fun day out.

    Yes, you read that right! You can meet two massive dragons and their animatronic newborns at various locations across the summer. See The Dragon's Lair on tour, set to visit Chepstow Castle, Raglan Castle, Tretower Court, Kidwelly Castle, Harlech Castle and Beaumaris Castle.

    Thrillseekers will be pleased to hear that Zip World's epic Fforest Coaster in North Wales has finally opened. Race through the trees in a toboggan suspended over four metres above the ground, reaching speeds of over 25 miles per hour!

    Head to one of Wales' many deli shops and stock a basket full of treats for a wild picnic. There's Wally's Delicatessen in Cardiff, Wright's Food Emporium in Carmarthen and Blas ar Fwyd in Llanrwst, to name but a few.

    Of course, Wales is surrounded by plenty of wonderful coastlines that you can enjoy on a hot day, but if you're looking to take a dip in an outdoor pool there are still lots of options. There's the Blackpill Lido in Swansea, Lido Ponty in Pontypridd or Drift Park in Rhyl.

    If it's too stuffy for sitting inside to watch a film, head to one of Wales' outdoor cinema events. Sunset Cinema uses sites in Haverfordwest, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, MoMo Events runs screenings in Newport, Luna cinema in Cardiff, Chepstow and Cwmbran and Starry Night Cinema hosts some North Wales events.

    Do as your grandparents would've liked to and hire a beach hut somewhere like Barry or Abersoch for the day. Or, head to the hills for August's Snowdonia Outdoor Festival, a celebration of good old fashioned outdoor pursuits like hiking, walking and climbing plus live music.

    Give your taste buds a treat at one of the newly opened big name bars and restaurants in Wales. There's Dylan's in Llandudno for fresh fish and waterside dining, Gareth Bale's Elevens on Cardiff for a pint or Catch 22 brasserie in Valley, Angelsey.

    Last summer, Cardiff hosted the incredible City of the Unexpected to mark Roald Dahl's centenary. Celebrations of the world famous author continue with the opening of Dahland, a brand new themed area in Oakwood Theme Park, Pembrokeshire. There's a rollercoaster inspired by James and the Giant Peach, a walkthrough, live shows, character appearances and more.
