Julius Drake, Artistic Director: 'My aim each year is simple: to bring to Machynlleth the world’s finest musicians to play the world’s most inspiring, life-enhancing music.
Belarus, Bulgaria, China, Hungary, Ireland, Poland, Rumania, Russia, Serbia, Sweden, Ukraine – this year we host superb musicians from all these countries, as well as from our own native Wales, Scotland and England.
The first three days of the Festival, curated by Dennis Jones, present a feast of the very best of Welsh music. The concerts that come after include Beethoven’s Hammerklavier Sonata, Dvorak’s Dumky Trio, Poulenc’s heart-wrenching drama La Voix Humaine, Brahms’ second String Sextet, Schumann’s Piano Quartet and lunchtime programmes devoted to two of my favourite composers, Beethoven and Rachmaninov.
The Masterclass this year will be led by one of the superb singers of our time, the Irish mezzo Ann Murray, DBE, whose wit and passion for music will inspire the talented young singers who take part. Other highlights include a concert featuring the legendary percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie, Welsh soprano Elin Manahan Thomas celebrating the composer Dilys Elwyn-Edwards’ centenary, a late night ‘Cabaret to end all Wars’ from the brilliant Jess Walker and the return by popular demand of the dazzling string players, Alexander Sitkovetsky and Maxim Rysanov.
A free family concert, pre-concert talks, interviews and exhibitions – you are warmly welcomed to the Machynlleth Festival 2018, a week to remember'.
