Barmouth Bridge 150th Anniversary Weekend at Barmouth/Abermaw

Southern Snowdonia, Barmouth, Gwynedd, LL42 1NE, Wales

The town council are pleased to host a weekend of activities and events to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Barmouth railway bridge with the highlight being, as darkness falls on Saturday evening, a themed laser and firework extravaganza centred on the harbour and bridge.

The structure is a truly outstanding example of 19th century engineering and provides a platform to enable stunning views from the viaduct itself while at the same time being an integral part of the beautiful scene framed by the Cader Idris mountain range and underlined by the Mawddach Estuary. It is an anniversary to be celebrated, and we hope that residents and visitors from far and wide will take part in the events held over the weekend.

Whether you are walking the Wales Coastal Path or following in the footsteps of Julia Bradbury and her “Railway Walks”, you will enjoy acquainting yourself with the beautiful Mawddach Estuary.

As part of a British Film Institute project, the Dragon Theatre will be showing the 1941 film ‘The Ghost Train’ which featured Barmouth Viaduct, along with other footage from the Britain on Film and British Transport archive collections. There also will be art displays, photograph exhibitions and memorabilia displays in the Arts Room/Community Rooms.

Barmouth Leisure Centre will be hosting an exhibition of model railway displays of various gauges. The centrepiece of the exhibition will be an accurate, scale model of Barmouth Viaduct, built by the very talented Barry Kelsall of Shrewsbury. Network Rail and other agencies will be holding pop-up information stands with plenty of information and help on hand. The exhibition will run from 10am until 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

Local gift shop “Luv It! Bermo” are hosting a train themed treasure hunt throughout the town in the week leading up to and including the weekend celebrations. Collect your entry sheet from Luv It! Bermo and have fun taking part and enjoying the sights of Barmouth, and of course, there will be prizes to be won!
